Our hearts are heavy as we process the devastating news out of Shreveport, where eight children were killed and two women critically injured during an incident of domestic violence. There are no words that can fully hold the weight of this kind of tragedy. Children should never be caught in the crossfire of violence in their own homes.

At its core, domestic violence is about power and control, and too often, it escalates in ways that impact entire families. This heartbreaking event is a stark reminder that domestic violence is not a “private matter.” It is a community issue, a public safety issue, and a human issue. When violence happens in the home, its ripple effects reach far beyond those walls—touching schools, neighborhoods, and entire communities.

Today, we stand in solidarity with survivors and with those working on the front lines to keep families safe. We also recommit ourselves to prevention, education, and support—because every child deserves to grow up in a home free from fear.

Authorities said the gunman is the father of seven of the children killed in Sunday’s attack. Authorities say he also shot the mother of his children and another woman, both of whom survived with serious injuries.
